• Inventory Split Incoming

MassiveCraft will be implementing an inventory split across game modes to improve fairness, balance, and player experience. Each game mode (Roleplay and Survival) will have its own dedicated inventory going forward. To help players prepare, we’ve opened a special storage system to safeguard important items during the transition. For full details, read the announcement here: Game Mode Inventory Split blog post.

Your current inventories, backpacks, and ender chest are in the shared Medieval inventory. When the new Roleplay inventory is created and assigned to the roleplay world(s) you will lose access to your currently stored items.

    Important Dates

    • April 1: Trunk storage opens.
    • May 25: Final day to submit items for storage.
    • June 1: Inventories are officially split.

Please make sure to submit any items you wish to preserve in the trunk storage or one of the roleplay worlds before the deadline. After the split, inventories will no longer carry over between game modes.

Over my time on Massive, I always find myself creating a naval oriented character, whether that's a Captain, Admiral, or just a sailyboy. Yet there's always been a lack of true depth. Characters may be a Captain, or Admiral, but often that's just a proficiency with limited-to-no roleplay impact. The best example I've seen of incorporation in roleplay is the current Brass Moors, headed by @festiveCorvid that targets generating contracts and progression impact. But I thought, what if there could be something even greater? What if we made our own system?

The Maelstrom is a coalition of pirates, sailors, and other like-minded individuals. It serves a system for advancement and development, with ranks, building and improving your own ship, and improving your equipment and crew (including a small number of NPCs, and spreadsheet-oriented points system). As this system is my own creation, not all activities will be through-and-through lore compliant, but it will be lore adjacent and the vast majority should be canon.

In practice, the core focus of the Maelstrom is measurable character advancement through everyday roleplay. All recruitment will be handled in-character, and while there will be NPC placeholder Captains to aid in the system build-out, eventually this will be entirely player-run. For the time being, we'll avoid looking for our own hub, using the locations around Crookback primarily to host our roleplay.

From an OOC standpoint, the Maelstrom strives to build and grow the scene for naval characters in a symbiotic manner with other in-place organizations and crews. I'll be reaching out to a few groups that I know have crews in place, but please feel free to contact me if you have or are planning one of your own.

Today marks the official release of the Maelstrom. With this comes the structural content - the characters, ships, and ranks of the organization. This allows us to start front-loading recruitment roleplay so that the load is more manageable on our content releases.

At its core, the Maelstrom is based around Captain-led flags. They cultivate an internal competition where everyone involved competes for doubloons, the name for our points system. Each Captain serves at the helm of their capital ship with a unique bonus to a certain aspect of the system. There will always be a minimum of 3 flags, but we have no maximum. The list of current capital ships and their Captains are as follows:
  • The Phoenix, captained by Valentino Sangiovese. Serving under the Admiral's flag is a great way to ensure quick advancement, resulting in a +1 bonus doubloon per week for each flag member.
  • The Man-of-War, captained by Ruzia. This Ovirran is rigorous with her flag's combat training, giving them a +5 boost to all combat skills for Maelstrom events. Her motto is, "When you sock 'em, make 'em stay socked."
  • The Heron, captained by Hector Karvelas. This upstanding Etosian merchant's flag always seems to find a way to come up with more doubloons. The Heron allows players to make an offering of doubloons on a weekly basis which may provide a hefty return on investment, or perhaps none at all.
As recruitment is done in character, this will be facilitated by joining the discord server linked below, where you can tag recruiters to find who's available for an interview. When you join, you also select which flag you'll be joining. For now, there's no restrictions on changing flag, but as we build out the systems, there will be incentives to join smaller flags and avoid switching often.

When you join a flag of the Maelstrom, you always will start at the rank of sailor. Each flag will of course have their Captain, followed by their second-in-command, the Quartermaster. With the introduction of ship battles will also come a variety of classes to choose, which is also why there are no intermediate ranks between sailor and quartermaster. All flags of the Maelstrom are headed by the Admiral, currently Valentino Sangiovese. As Admiral is more of a DM role, it isn't currently up for grabs (however, he can still lose his position as Captain).

This is a good time to touch on the mutiny mechanic. We're starting with mostly NPC Captains, with ships already constructed. While it will be a route to use doubloons towards building your own ship and crew, I plan on phasing out all the NPC Captains as our numbers grow. For now, the best steps you can take towards that are active recruitment towards your flag (this will result in promotion to Quartermaster, and earning doubloons for recruitment). Recruitment is handled specifically by recruiters, so feel free to reach out if you're interested in becoming one :)

A frequently asked question is what is the role of proficiency-based ships in the Maelstrom? Due to the structure of our progression system, all capital ships are built and improved via doubloons, and don't translate from proficiency ships. However, your vessel is still recognized as canon within the system, and while you may be titled as a sailor, that doesn't mean you can't be Captain of your own ship. Deeper in the future, we expect to incorporate proficiency ships into a large-scale battle system once our numbers grow.

Reserved. Content packages will be detailed here on first release, and moved into the main post as we progress.

Update (April 5th, 2020): If you plan on creating your own flag as soon as possible, and aren't interested in the capital ships that already exist, you can join and form that crew straightaway. But if you don't have a capital ship built through the system by the release of ship duels, you will be at a disadvantage (even if you have one built, it may not be up to par if you don't earn enough doubloons)

Released 4/9/20

Hello everyone! This Thursday I am back with the release of the Earning Doubloons content package. This release includes everything you need to start making money in the world of the Maelstrom, from growing your fame, to daily challenges, to weekly events. Our processing day is Thursday so the first changes have been completed, thanks to our early adopters. You can view all of our banking data at the spreadsheet linked HERE.

There will likely be a few different concepts jumping out at you. First, you may notice that doubloons can be received by an individual or a flag (and transferred between the two!). This will become more prevalent with our content package for next Thursday, how to spend your doubloons. In short, there will be rewards for both the flag as well as the individual to purchase, which will leave the decision on your plate whether to be a selfless flagmate, or a selfish pirate.

For those sailors looking for a competitive way to put themselves ahead on a daily basis, we introduce our CHALLENGE gambling system. This involves placing doubloons up on a bet between yourself and at least one other pirate, with the winner taking all. Up to 3 doubloons may be wagered on a daily basis, and the format is up to you (however, our templated events can serve as a starting point should you be seeking ideas). The wager should be registered in the discord's earnings log when the bet is made, acknowledged by the other party, and the result recorded. An example is as follows:

Azas: Valentino Sangiovese wagers 3 doubloons against Moji in a footrace from the Smiling Fox to the Requisition Bank.
Athelois: Moji accepts this bet.
Athelois: Moji won the race.

Another nuance of the doubloon system is that your fame will be tracked. While doubloons can be earned and spent, your fame measures your lifetime achievement within the Maelstrom; in other words, every single doubloon you've ever earned. However, do be aware, this will be decreased for any doubloons you lose in a challenge, so it can pay to make sure any odds in the challenge are in your favor.

If daily challenges aren't going your way, rally your flag together to compete in our weekly events. With varying days, times, and formats, you'll want to keep an eye on the announcements section of discord for the next flag competition, which will always have at least 48 hours notice. Below are some examples of how the weekly event may look:
  • Cards, structured in a tournament - commonly will be hearts, spades, or a poker variant. The rules will be included in the announcement.
  • Fist fighting tournament, with a select number of champions from each crew
  • Drinking games to find the strongest liver
To discourage crew switching to game the games, the crew of all current sailors will lock when the event announcement is made. However, new sailors of course will still have their choice of crews.

As always, I appreciate your feedback and questions to help clarify things. I look forward to beating you in cards.

4/16/20 Welp, due to lack of any engagement, we'll be shutting it down. Thanks to those who supported my endeavors!
