Well, a lot of people play special permissions. That would kind of ruin it. I mean, then only a few people would be willing to use that slot, as well as the fact that you need an approved character.

While a special permission is a good suggestion, like what @StereoTurtle said, it would kind of ruin the fun for everyone. Plus, you can only have six approved characters (correct me if I'm wrong). Many only want the characters that A: Need a character application (special perm characters) or B: Are characters that they play the most often or use in player quests (or C: They need it to keep track of their characters like me) approved, so why bother approving a character just for the sake of gliding? Plus, people new to the server would not know it's a special permission, and most likely would do it anyway. Personally, I think that anyone being able to glide is logical as long as the glider is large enough and/or the character has the right body mass for the glider. (Orcs may need bigger gilders, Ch'ien-Ji may need smaller ones, etc.)

There's also the possibility that this elytra will just become a fad and die out after a few weeks.
If you've seen a few of the pvp threads, you would know that gliding isn't a very plausible combat idea. So the only users will be RPers.

Now, I've experienced the elytra when it was in snapshot phase. It was fun at first (like the first week) but things have been added and things have been nerfed.
One thing players did in the snapshot versions was shoot themselves with healing arrows to gain infinite flight. This is no longer a major thing, as you can not use an infinity bow with tipped arrows. So infinite flight is no more.

So all that's left is jumping from a high place and flying around for a few seconds, then you're done. Repeat 10 times, and the fun is gone. 1.9 is now out, and I've gotten an elytra. But I hardly use it, because gliding isn't really something I need to do. Heck, I'm more ecstatic about the horse riding being client based (a lot smoother of a ride=no lag) than the elytra nowadays.

With the Law Of Diminishing Marginal Utility, eventually elytra usage will die out and not be as enjoyable to players. So making gliders a huge addition to lore is just getting on a hype train that is fated to fall off a cliff. This is mostly why I think keeping it a race thing is the best solution.

Not really a race, more of an infection like vampirism but it would make wings less of a wanted feature, maybe make it a special application.

As far as the technological advancement idea goes, it could easily be something very similar to how Arch Age handles it, or it could be based off of Leonardo Da Vinci's designs. Personally, I'd prefer something similar to Da Vinci's gliders as it would morph well with the quasi-renaisance technological setting of Aloria. On top of that, it opens doors for specialized military functions. IE: specialized troops that'd be dropped from airships, etc. In the technological aspect of it, it's a broad horizon to look at.

As a form of magic, it can be intertwined with ethereal magic, possibly as an addition or a replacement of the very infrequently used or thought of ethereal form. To return to the concept as a technology, the technology could easily be written to be inspired by the magic form and, naturally, birds. To restate, whatever option is chosen in the end, it's a very broad spectrum of possibilities for the elytra to be written in.

I don't see the need of making a entire race or magic out of this update, its unnecessary, and kind of stupid. Honestly just make a technological advancement of gliders and be done with it. Possibly outlawed in surface/main Regalia, but under in the sewers, gliding could be used. [Oh and maybe can be used for future wars]

I'd actually really like a bird type of race, as long as they aren't the Avarr, or at least, what the Avarr were before. There's something completely uninteresting about gigantic slave orc birds of prey for me. When they were there, they felt more like a race with only one type of personality, which offered little in the way of creative freedom.
However, not all birds are giant eagles, so you could easily make a less threatening and more complex Avarr species and say they've devolved. I'd love to see a society of peacock people or something.
As for the other suggestions, I'd support most of these things. Add wings to the mekket. Make ethereal wings possible. Make an existing race have the ability to levitate, or make a new race that can levitate. (Some sort of magical-construct race could work well for this.) Make some mad inventor invent safe gliders. All of these are things I would love to see, and because there'd be so many options, they'd spread out roleplay among the races more evenly.

Oh heck no. That would, in a way, limit the possibilities for character creation for the Non-Premiums. The whole point of roleplay is to have creative freedom over your characters (as long as it's lore compliment, of course). For example, if, let's say butterfly mekket, were introduced, then only premiums would have the ability to create those characters that can legitimately fly. Is that fair for the non-premiums to have their character creation ability limited? To me it isn't. Plus, players probably won't buy premium just so they can have a flying character. All you'd really be doing is giving premiums an additional character creation option not available to everyone. Some may disagree, but this is where I stand with it. I'd stand in the same spot even if I had premium.

I would love having gliders, and have some solutions for most of the problems like about crime rates. Just arm the guards with bows and have people get a permit, (NOT SPECIAL PERMISSION) to the gliding or make a special place so others can glide, (Like drones in a city). It's much easier than creating a whole new race, and the staff would have to work very hard and they deserve a break from all the adjustments to the game. I agree that it would boost the the Empire, as soldiers can glide out of an airship AND add on to the safety of airships, as if one were to crash, everyone grabs a glider and jumps out. It would also help guards as they can patrol with the glider to see more. Not just that, we can make it very limited so robbery is Godrp.

But I have some concerns... How would this effect ways as to people who love flying a bit to much? Like really, seeing like a flock of people flying in Regalia... The Ailors are migrating for once... Wings can effect the RP world's fabric for all we know, it could even rip a hole in the Server's space-time-continuum, I would love to see that.

All I can say, is a lotta people better be going splat on the sidewalk. Reason being, gliders would be a brand new field of technology never explored yet, let alone safe for public use. So far the only air technology involves gas and fire to displace air (or something around those lines) Not once has there been a glider like mechanism.

I hear a lot of people use Da Vinci as a means to add gliders. But before we do that, did Da Vinci actually have a working glider in his time? No, just sketches of possible ways it could be done. It wasn't until the 19th century before gliders actually started to work. That's a very long time after Da Vinci. So using Da Vinci as the founder of the glider isn't a great idea. Granted, he did some science around them and overall said it was plausible. But people kept crashing to the ground for many centuries after that. Sure, we could have some lucky Ailorians solve all the aerodynamics in one go, but it's highly unlikely since I doubt they'd have sufficient funding and a lack of an ideal testing area.

I'm all for eyltras going for the Mekket and an avian race, but I draw the line at gliders. It just doesn't seem like a practical idea for the masses to be flying around on a very new technology, especially since 99% of us would have zero knowledge on how to use it safely. I think it's a generous assumption to say 80% of characters using this technology will die on the first run. There's no safety methods in place, and most people are uneducated in it.

That's all I have to say for IC reasons against gliders. I can't really say anything about the OOC (since it will happen anyways) but I do find it annoying to see random gliders around the streets flying willy-nilly everywhere they go. It just doesn't fit with the atmosphere I've gotten used to in Regalia. I think we should just keep to the ground for the time being. Maybe in 500 years, this could be a thing, but not for now.

Well, the Mekket have wings, so they should fly, something about levitating vampires, mages forming wing is an interesting idea and as far as a technological solution, I agree with @Mecharic on the topic of flight towers, that would be cool. For the record, races that can't fly, are gonna want to fly anyways, so an quick and easy solution to this problem would be to go Air Bender style.

Airplanes exist, and yet humans still rely on the sea for shipping. Hang-gliders exist, but I'm sure we both know that you're far more likely to see someone getting around by rowboat.

Ships still have the advantage of durability, capacity, reliability, ease of access, etc. Airships are more like pleasure-craft or exploration vessels, and gliders would likely be similarly employed.

Not to mention, if you fall off a boat, you're just in the ocean. If you fall off an airship, you're falling to your death.
