With plans for a new inhouse plugin for the factions world that will allow factions to become more proper Empires, with more interactions and commands for their subjects, I am seeing how the factions world can change and evolve into a new era, with more activity, more tension, more pvp with bigger battles, and more management. This is my hypothetical timeline beginning from when the first Empires have formed.
Chapter 1: First Empires
With the plugin now live, the first factions to become empires will consolidate the power they have had before. Close allies, vassal factions and perhaps alt factions will all join the host as it is more convenient like this. There will be several big empires along with a bunch of small empires. Things will not change for some time, as factions will maintain the relations as they were. But now, it will be clear who is with who.
Some smaller factions will decide between creating their own empire, or joining one of the existing ones.
The beginning will be slow, but the hosts' empires will grow until every faction that has been friendly with them joins them. Options for expansion influence wise will gradually decrease.
Chapter 2: Integration
As the hosts of the empires have gotten every faction that has been close to them to join their empire, they will have grown considerably in strength and power, as multiple active factions have banded together for a common purpose. Some empires will put their power to the test, against the enemies they have been hostile with since before the first empires. Others will try to expand their borders by creating new cities and getting new factions to join.
With empires making clear who the enemies are, as they all banded together, people will see the world more in black and white : "There is us, and then there are our enemies and everyone else". Without shifting alliances, and friendships getting closer, over time every empire will be distinct from one another, with their own subcultures and systems. Players will relate more with their own empire than with outside empires. All factions in the empire will gradually become somewhat identical, with similar systems and subculture, unifying the empire. This will create even more tension between rivaling empires.
Chapter 3: Expansion
With empires being more distinct and unique, they will seek out to spread their influence on the world, and will go all kinds of directions, depending on the ambitions of the leader.
Land nearby the capital and bases will be the first to be influenced by these empires, as they are the most logical places to build new cities and structures, in this unique empire's style.
Empires will try to pressure any nearby faction to join them, and look for strategically placed factions nearby enemy empires' important cities, or factions on a good building spot in a world.
There will be a scramble for the best building spots, altough, the empires with cities in more isolated lands will have an easier time expanding.
Chapter 4: Migration of Roleplayers
With the empires having developed a unique subculture and a bunch of cities, in need of people to inhabit them, roleplayers become of interest. Roleplayers that will use the buildings, setting up shops and taverns and the like, inside the empires in the distinct style. They will make the leaders feel more fulfilled, seeing how their creation is being put to use.
Roleplayers in Regalia will notice how the factions world has transformed from a savage and dangerous land to a world with flourishing empires, all with their own interesting history and subculture. Those fed up of Regalia will seek new life and will do productive jobs that will benefit the empire, as they produce items, grand power and pay taxes. Some of them might turn into pvpers, others into builders, or they'll simply have a good time being a citizen.
The rest, could be anything. If you have anything to add or say, feel free to do so.
I think it is important we have some speculation about the future, as this will make it easier and clearer to understand what needs to be done and how MassiveCraft wants to shape the factions world. Of course, the Empires plugin will be a bit primitive at the start, but will be developed more as time goes by. Knowing what to change about this plugin depends on what the empires do, and want to be. If the plugin is developed with some sort of timeline in mind, empires can develop and flourish.
