Overview
- The Lahti-Viitanens are the ruling house of Ose, the only Balten-majority region, and one of very few openly pagan Noble houses.- House Lahti originally joined the Empire after the Second Skagger War, being Drixagh vassals that were integrated into the Empire. The Viitanens were a commoner house ennobled for their service to the Counts of Ose that merged with them just before they joined the late stages of the Drixagh Rebellion
- The House was subjugated by the Holy Herebrands, and spent a long period under their overlordship. When the Drixagh Rebellion occured, they did not initially join the revolt, except for Aulikki Viitanen's supporters who formed a guerilla band. Towards the end of the conflict they openly rebeled and helped expel the Herebrands, thus regaining relative sovereignty.
- Politically, the House aligns with most of the Northern and Velheim houses out of self-interest. They are overtly sympaethtic to minority cultures and tribes, and detest the Herebrands.
- Internally, the House can be divided into three branches; the Lahtis, Viitanens, and Aulikki Viitanens supporters.
- The Lahtis are the traditional rulers of Ose who vassalized under Drixagh and integrated into the Empire. They are generally in favor of reconciliation with Unionists, integrating into Regalia, and improving Ose's standing in the wider empire. They generally hide their Paganism; not denying it but not practicing their faith too openly to avoid drawing attention.
- The Viitanens were ennobled for managing their estates and raising troops, and support economic and administrative modernization. They are openly pagans but still support reconcliation, and often come into conflict with more conservative peers over how much Ose should try and integrate into a modernized Regalia.
- Aulikki Viitanen's splinter faction formed early in the Drixagh Rebellion. She abandoned her seat on the Privy Council to lead a guerilla band against the Herebrands, prompting her family to cut her off before they too revolted. She strongly opposed the houses merging and has gone into self-imposed exile, but is still generally supported by minor nobles and wealthy peasantry.
- Common issues for them are that the Lahti-Viitanens act ashamed of their paganism, are too reconciliatory with Unionists, and that the rapid pace of modernization is harming their culture. They are strongly pagan, and financialy support a number of Revivalist movements and research into the pre-Empire tribes. Their guerilla activities were not supported by the Viitanens when they began, and Wirtem or Krainivaya Lords familiar with this will usually note if the Rebellion had failed, her own House would have hung her and her supporters as bandits.
- The Count of Ose is in ill-health, and will die soon. When the Count of Ose dies, the Privy Council will vote to choose a replacement from the line of succesion. This is a looming issue within the family, as it's likely Aulikki and her supporters will try to install her as Countess and begin reverseing many of the Lahti-Viitanen's policies.- The Viitanens were ennobled for managing their estates and raising troops, and support economic and administrative modernization.
