So I have always found castles interesting and enjoy making them. In addition to my current projects I would like to build some more castles. I would prefer them to be some real life castle, as I find those the most fun to create. I will however do others that do not have real-life counterparts. I ask that below you leave some cool real-life castles that would be cool to see, or just some castle you've thought up. If it is one you've conjured with your imagination I ask that you leave some type of description of it, that way I have something to go off of. If you like any castle that is built and posted here, I can transfer save files/schematics as well as building it in Massive for you. I hope that you all leave some suggestions below as that is the purpose of this :)

Ah, finally. A fellow enthusiast of castles!

Now, ick thing about building castles in Minecraft is delegating on how much visual detail you want on a wallpiece. Either you use heavy amounts of depth with various contrasting blocks, or you use a mixture of similarly hued blocks to create a flat-yet-not-flat looking wall. For this reason, its a touch easier to build castles that have accentuated details than the awful stone hulks that are most pre-Normandian English castles. I mean, look at this.

This is one of the prettier ones, and its all sorts of slatted gray.

It gets real difficult, too. Some castles look awesome in monotone, but there's no way to recreate the amount of detail found in gothic castles. One of my favorites, Chateau de Chenonceau, would be tough to build in Minecraft simply due to the amount of details.

Some castles, mostly Renaissance, late Medieval, and Eccelestical styles, have a wonderful mix of colors that you can use to your advantage. Some can be sublime (and recreated through stained clay and brick) such as this Chateau de Lacave.
Lacave-Chateau_Belcastel.jpg

You can get all sorts of funky with color and shape. This is Peles Castle, a neo-Renaissance conglomerate of all sorts of castle styles.

I think the key towards creating attractive monotone castles start from attractive shapes, with the application of details presented as a secondary feature. Lichtenstein Castle is a beautiful example of castle architecture for this reason. Note that the geography its built upon is a crucial feature to the visual silohette of this beauty.

Another example, albeit far more colorful, is Eltz Castle. Such a striking shape!

A much more drab, though dramatic and large castle. Bouzov Castle.

Of course, details are also great ways to make the wall of a castle stand out. While converted into a modern section slightly, Schwerin Castle is a wonderful example of highly ornate imperial castle architecture.

Here's a harmonious combination of shape and detail, even if its built in one tone of color. This is Schloss Marienburg.
fhAgsWM.jpg

And yet another. This is Frederiksborg Castle, a rather late-era Danish castle.
GsigPZd.jpg

Lets not forget function, however. Castles built to prevent people from jumping in can be pretty, albeit relying heavily on shape for its aesthetic appeal. This is Hochosterwitz Castle, a 9th century Austrian beauty.

They can get super quirky as well, relying on its nature for charm. This is Castell Coch, a Welsh fortification.

This is the drymoat of Breze, France. The deepest drymoat in Europe, its also a beautiful scene from below as well as from above.

Here's Satvey, a German brick castle.

Ooh! Lets not forget about Swiss Castles! I love that lakeside charm that most of these suckers have.
ehyzlaK.jpg

Or the Italian ones, built in monotones but rustic and formidable.

Here's Karlstejn Castle.

Though arguably one of my favorite castles out there is not a castle at all, but a beautiful monestary known as Mont-Sant Michel. This French cathedral is built over a tide-weathered castle and towers over the countryside. It brings a tear to my eye.

That, or its Hohenzollern Castle.

...Goddamn, I love castles.

Tune in next time for Middle Eastern fortifications!

@MrHappyTinkles So many to choose from! Frederiksborg Castle, Chateau de Lacave, or Chateau de Chenonceau will most likely be the selection for the first that I will build. Ill upload update pictures here as the build progresses. :)

Tink's tips are great, though I don't quite agree with finding old English castles ugly.
I think that keeping in mind William of Normandy was able to create something like 50 Norman style castles within the course of a few years, they look quite remarkable. They were also built as to show dominance over a region and also for defensive purposes, so you can't look at them like they were a a "work of art", that's true.
You'll need to have a slight think on who the castle is for as well.

I've spent lots of hours (When not building Dwarven Strongholds within mountains) building old English castles as they are somewhat a favourite of mine. Sometimes you will need to over exaggerate a few details like the degree of detail on window frames, but a lot of times Norman castles are a lot of fun and a challenge to learn different ways to make them stand out.
A few pointers:
  • Landscape is key, if it's a flat field with hardly any nature, it will be harder (not impossible though) to make the castle give that "wow" look.
  • Use trees, vines and vegetation to break up both the stone in the build, but also to add some personality to it.
  • Different "patterns" for the stone can help make the build feel more detailed. If you want to see some of the things I have tried that work, contact me.
  • Over-exaggerate detail on door-frames and window ascents as well battlements. For ideas, feel free to contact me about this as well.
  • Add what we call "clutter" around the build to also give that personality to it. E.g, crates, barrels, carts, Scaffolding, etc.
  • Sometimes having cottages pressed up against the castles walls can break it up a bit.
The best bit of information you need to remember is to have fun with it. Sometimes thinking too much into the "practicality" or science of the build can ruin the fun and evidently make the build look boring.

Chateau Fontainebleu?

Wonderful place, used by Napoleon as his palace instead of Versailles, It is amazing.

I actually have a picture of Eltz Castle from when my dad went to Germany. I thought at the time that it looked like Cinderella's castle. (I was really little) ^.^

Here is a castle that is in colombia that I think has potential if you tweaked the bottom half below the bridge. Maybe takeing that out completely or continuing the same detail from the top down. Idk just though I would share this =)

@Xx_Ginjaninja_xX This is a really nice structure. The intricate details of it make really memorable, but in Minecraft would be semi-difficult to replicate. However since the castle itself does not seem to be overly large, the details may be doable on a larger scale. Thanks for the suggestion! I definitely see this as one of my future builds :)

Ahh, a thread for fellow castle enthusiasts. Splendid.

Bran castle, perfect size to be built in minecraft, vibrant colours and an awesome history involving the German Ritterorden as well as count Dracula. Just mind the landscape too.

Also, if you have the time and the materials, build Buda castle. It could make a pretty good faction with a huge faction base.

I love building castles too, for my new faction base I decided to build a grand castle for me and my faction inspired by the chateau de pierrefonds. From these two images hopefully you can see the resemblance, and also I did make it a bit different, adding cannons and whatnot.

@Medvekoma Thanks for the suggestions! I have actualy built two bran castles before, I mean how could you not :). I would not mind revisiting it though and making a better one. And I was not aware of the Buda Castle so thank you for that suggestion as well!

I'm such an enthusiast I revisited it the second time two weeks ago. In person (wasntme)

And well, I walk down the road and see Buda Castle from where I live up in the mountain. If you want, I could search or even snatch a picture of the back part where the townhomes are.

Bran castle, the castle of dracula? yea I've seen that, it's nice. You should put loads of spikes outside, you know the spikes of impalement? :)

@Athorian , yes I have actually seen this castle from a far and on dynmap before. It is cool to see that there is more meaning to it other than, "look castle". You did a great job with it! :)

@Medvekoma no need. That is really cool how you have been able to see and visit both of these two places. Real life inspiration for making a build can be a lot more fun if you can actually go and see with your own two eyes the place itself :)

@Steltral Thanks for the suggestions! Do you have names for the pictures? The names help so I can find pictures from all angles :)

Looking good! The reason why I want to advocate for opening some sort of creative field is to see builders come together in a thread like this. Its perhaps the most positive build-related venture I've seen for a while.

A castle in Bauska if you want to see something more simple and half reconstructed.

Cesis_castle_ruins_%28Latvia%29.jpg
a castle in Cēsis. most of these will probably be ruin-ish but we have a ton of castles here

Someone post a castle thats got tons of irl history, I wanna see it
