• Inventory Split Incoming

MassiveCraft will be implementing an inventory split across game modes to improve fairness, balance, and player experience. Each game mode (Roleplay and Survival) will have its own dedicated inventory going forward. To help players prepare, we’ve opened a special storage system to safeguard important items during the transition. For full details, read the announcement here: Game Mode Inventory Split blog post.

Your current inventories, backpacks, and ender chest are in the shared Medieval inventory. When the new Roleplay inventory is created and assigned to the roleplay world(s) you will lose access to your currently stored items.

    Important Dates

    • April 1: Trunk storage opens.
    • May 25: Final day to submit items for storage.
    • June 1: Inventories are officially split.

Please make sure to submit any items you wish to preserve in the trunk storage or one of the roleplay worlds before the deadline. After the split, inventories will no longer carry over between game modes.

Hey, so, i've decided I want to share with everyone my sort of... Pet peeve that just drives me up a wall when i'm playing Massivecraft and role-playing in general. I'm sure A LOT of people have seen me talk about this, whether in ally chat, faction chat, or even occasionally local chat, but I've noticed over the years, that, many people have made characters in game (which, i'm actually guilty of part of this;) but when they make these characters, because they want to role-play, they make them extremely lore in compliant (i keep my characters to lore, and mainly do faction RP, because i honestly cant stand going into regalia and seeing this sort of stuff) And i know i'm not the only one who is really upset by this, others have expressed the same concerns.

But essentially what i'm trying to say is, there's not much... originality anymore. Like, I've encountered players who impersonate a specific TV show character, video game character, anime character, and it just disappoints me now. Massivecraft is known for its creativity, in the lore, the races, etc. But players will sit and make these characters, that are carbon copy of an existing character and use them in role play. Not only do they do this, but they reference things that aren't in lore, or use actions that aren't in lore.

Im not exactly trying to bash, or flame, I just wanted to finally get this pent up irritation out. Because i just feel like i cant go to regalia without seeing people doing this. I've seen people roleplay as Cloud Strife. That... isnt... just.... *facepalm*

My rantings over. Feel free to post your opinion below, though.

I did this when I still RP'd. I'm not creative lmao

But then theres people who have been on for months... who, even when sent the lore pages, ignore it and continue to rp as a pre made character
Ignore them if they're too incompliant then
It's possible.
If i can ignore the breakfast priest, so can you

Yes, i once met someone who played a fricking breakfast priest, summoning bacon outta nowhere

Make a ticket if you see someone with an incompliant character or a character who has been ripped from another universe. When you are in Regalia, you are expected to adhere to the lore. Those who wish to roleplay incompliantly may do so in the factions worlds.

This needs to be a new form of magic
EGGcelent idea.

But yea, I think we all have some cringe moments we remember- I found a guy roleplaying as Death. He was walking around emoting things like "Pointed at (name) and they turned to dust+" . Fortunately, he seemed fairly receptive when i sent him the lore links, not sure if he is still around as I dont remember the username, but eh.

Some people have trouble with characters, and so use a character they like from other media as the basis for their character in Massive. As long as they're sticking to the server's lore, and not just calling themselves by the character's name, I don't see the problem. Most of these "copied" characters are their players' first. In time, they'll grow as Roleplayers, and differentiate their characters from the source material or make new characters.

We also shouldn't forget that even an experienced role player will look to other media for inspiration. Doctor Fong is inspired by the film "7 Faces of Dr. Lao". Bethany Fong's name (and an older version of her backstory) is a reference to Elizabeth Bathory, a prolific female serial killer. Madame Fong is little more than an amalgamation of "Cursed Seer" and Witch tropes interpreted through Massive's Lore.

Adynost Amare (my first character, and barely lore compliant) was based on Corvo Attano from Dishonored.

Vlu'xilkik Trzckk (my baby who I've played forever since her creation) is based on several things at once. But her cutesy behavior, and desire to become strong and appreciated is based chiefly on Chihiro Fujisaki from Daganaronpa.

Conf is very loosely inspired by Mat Cauthon from Wheel of Time- at least the original version was.

I also tried to make a character once that was based on a character from a Youtube series I had binge watched all 100-ish episodes of. That ended very poorly, played him maybe twice.

In the wise words of @Doc_Cantank

"There's only so many cookie cutters, we just choose the ones that fit us best."

Some people have trouble with creativity and at this point everything is based off something. My own characters are based off several things (and my main character was originally based of Edward Elric from FMA, even) to make them who they are. If they stick to the lore than its Gucci fam

One of my characters (Ayahoshi Tetsume) is lightly based off of Edward Elric from Full metal alchemist (brotherhood), due to his metal arms and legs (and the fact that he is an alchemist XD). But his personality and mannerisms are based off of my father, and his story is of my own creation.

My second character, I'm not gonna talk about my first one, was the original version of my now very lore compliant Altior Blavetti. He tended to have no weaknesses, pull random magic items out of his a- butt and he was /originally/ based off of *shivers* the concept of Assassin's Creed. Not even an actual character, just a stereotypical assassin. Everybody has one, I guess. I held on to him and improved him over time and he's now a good lore compliant approved character who I mainly use for Fac RP

I guess the only character of mine that was directly inspired by a different one was Trash. Name and combat style was more or less inspired from Junkrat, but I went in a different direction personality-wise.

Well, my second char Penelope who later became an actually good char was originally Erza Scarlet's clone (Fairy Tail) with Jace Beleren's personality (Magic the Gathering) only as a perfect Mary Sue without the same struggles Jace faced in the original books. And she was the stereotypical assassin character.

My next char was based upon Mikaela from Owari No Seraph. She was a perfect looking genius blonde Chyga who only took blood from willing donors. Yeah. She got killed off for a reason.

Djenly is lightly inspired by Light Yagami from Death Note, with mainly the whole "I'm perfect, everyone else is evil save for a select few and anyone avoiding judgement should be disposed of" thing. However her base personality is quite a bit different and she looks nothing at all like Light, along with having different goals and ambitions.

From the above three examples it should be obvious which character is actually well written and which two were trash. The difference is Djenly was her own character, whereas the other two were just copies of some random anime character. It's totally cool to have your char be loosely inspired by something, but I honestly can't rp with people when they play an anime character.

I'd be fine with it, if it werent PAINFULLY obvious. For example, im going to use Kirito as an example. not pointing out a player or trying to. If i were to take off a few letters out of Kirito's full name "Kazuto Kirigaya" and set me /nick to "Kato Kirigaya " and got a literal Kirito skin (the jacket, the outfit, boots, etc) and ran around, as an Altalar with a wife and kids, whos excellent with a sword, and can do magic at the same time, im sure people would see me (in the example, i honestly dont do this) would be... peeved. Am i right?

You're completely correct tbh. I LOVE anime OOC but making your char a clone of someone's intellectual property is pretty lazy and uncreative imo.

I mean, i can handle like, and entire creative name, a creative skin, and a loose basage on like, a characters personality, because lets face it, if you dont use ideas from another work your characters personality will turn into your own (ive had this happen with my most biggest character, Alverrea. I had a general baseing for her, but it eventually turned into her becoming literally ME ingame. which im not opposed to. I have a variety of characters, who i want to actually develop and use in game before making an application for so i have more hands on experience with the character before having to write up literally everything.

But when you are literally a carbon copy of a character, it just makes my skin crawl and i usually leave the roleplay if someone like that comes up

Your argument is that players are not original. The fact of the matter is, that nothing is original. There occasional moments of time when something becomes popular for the first time, but everything is derived from another idea no matter how small.
Regardless of how original an original idea may be, stealing characters from other universes is still just that, stealing.
To have your character influenced by an outside source is fine, because at least it's yours. But when your walking around in a dark age version of naruto, there is a problem.

There is originality. For example, MassiveCrafts lore is mostly all very very original and i applaud the lore writers for that, and ive known people who have made characters that are not based on an existing person, or idea. Its a thing still, but most dont really tap into their creative side and prefer to copy other things which leads to cringy anime characters running about.

My main character, Armyn, was based off Geralt from the Witcher games. But mainly just looks and personality traits because I'm an uncreative piece of shit.

Sadly, though, the people who do copy an already made character, know it and yet wont do a thing to change it because they are stubborn

Ok first off, if you take a look at the lore, and the names for races and places, you will notice unoriginal plot lines and name dirivitives.
For example Ithania (Continent on massivecraft) is very similar to Lithuania (a country in the real world)
This is not about the lore, but about people litirally stealing characters. Can you honestly tell me that people going around as vampires named Alucard or child swordsmen named kirito are doing it from their subconscious? Really now? These are the kids who are watching the anime and thought "Hey! This is a cool character concept that would be cool in massivecraft!" But instead of creating their own character to do so, they just steal the character from the anime.
You can argue it all you want, but nothing is original, but many things are exciting.
If you are going to look around the world for something that has no influences from something else, then I wish you luck. There are over 7 billion people alive today, there will always be a similar idea or concept. But again, there is a difference between inspiration and stealing.
Just that the character is exactly the same as another character in your eyes, doesn't mean it's exactly the same to that player. Who's to say that a player deliberately created an existing character rather than creating a character that sounds plausible from subconscious thoughts of an existing character.
Me, and anyone else who decides to take a glance at them.
So you can't just tell someone they can't play a character, because they don't always know that they copied a character.
Firstly, we are not talking about people who just so happened to create a character that is similar to another character in another universe. Becuase those people don't make carbon copies, and usually change things around once they find out. We are talking about people who have litirally recreated Naruto and Kirito without changing anything. And no one is saying that they can't play those characters, but what people are saying is that we are under no obligation to interact with these people.
I believe that the current system for Character applications works, don't worry about it. Unless it explicitly does not follow midieval guidelines.
It does, because it stamps out these characters. But usually, these guys don't even make a forums account.
Also never heard the phrase "Great artists borrow, the greatest artists steal."
I understand the symbolism, but no one really cares. Stealing characters is still stealing characters. If we can see it, then we can judge.

but nothing is original

You're not wrong in that nothing can ever be unique, but it's important to remember that creativity isn't just the outcome, but the road you walk to get there as well. A character shouldn't be ripped out of another work or narrative, but instead be representative of what you as a person have seen and felt, they should represent a shard of yourself, an amalgamation of your perceptions and experiences.
