Character Death Rules haven't been updated for actual years. We have made additions over the years, but clarification of the old rules was never considered necessary or even part of our planning. Today, a player asked the Lore Staff to add more detail to the rules to clarify gray zones. When I looked into the rules, I was dissatisfied with many of them, and concluded that they (from my perspective) did not connect or represent the way I felt about character killing. As such, I pushed an update for the Character Death Rules, and asked for some feedback from the players in the RP Community Discord, which received unanimous approval. This change is not set in stone, that's to say, we're doing a trial run. I don't suspect there will be much trouble with these rules because they essentially add protections here and there while taking some from other places, but should there be public demand, we can always revert some rules or add additional clauses where the circumstances demand them to be.

Relevant to:
List of Changes:
  • Maim Perms have been re clarified to only be arms, legs, eyes and mouth. Skin, ears and nose or other aesthetics are not Maims. Anything that can reasonably be reverted with alchemy, magic or healing or time is not a maim.
  • Kill perms are still the same.
  • Given Consent is still the same, but in line with our recent policy change on evidence, we no longer accept proof from anything but Server Logs.
  • Surrendered Consent has been changed, and faces the largest change in these rules. Previously, the rules dictated that attempting to kill another character, would surrender consent. This has been removed. In any and all circumstances, attempting to kill or maim another character will not result in any permissions being given away. There's a couple of reasons for this:
    • The main clause was to protect the players from random PK. I still don't think this will happen, because the Regalian Law still covers these in Law situations, and hopefully it will simply result in more spicy crime versus crime rp without the fear of losing characters.
    • The actual outcome of this rule in reality was mostly just notable and "high-conflict" roleplayers sticking their necks out for the sake of story, and getting curb stomped as a result because of kill and maim perms. With this unequal situation resolved, I hope that those who create that conflict are able to continue
  • Mental Anguish is a new exception clause that allows Staff to protect players under exonerating circumstances like being forced to roleplay out things they want to escape from in real life.
  • Guard Exceptions have been clarified, but inherently not changed in any way.
  • Capture Exceptions have been changed. Previously, there was a system of 2 strike warning then maim then kill perms for those who acted against their captor in unrealistic fear-rp. Now, the new rules dictate that a character will always have maim perms given while captive, but these perms can only be acted upon if Lore Staff agree that the character is not roleplaying out fear-rp realistically.
  • Monster Character death/kill perms have been clarified. Any character that can turn into a monster when doing so in certain situations when they don't need to and in front of guards, gives away kill perms, because guards can only reasonably respond to a grotesque monster by trying to kill it.
What I hope to come out of this, is that people who play antags and criminal characters will simply roleplay instead of pondering and second guessing OOC kill perms, and feel more secure to engage in criminal versus criminal conflict without the fear of dying without inflicting any damage on the opposing party.

Can you elaborate on this part in particular? (Having difficulty understanding)

I believe it's to say that you can avoid or rephrase punishment if said punishment would be particularly emotionally taxing on an individual due to real life experiences. Say I lost a hand as a serviceman for my country, a punishment involving the loss of my hand may emotionally traumatise me, therefore I can request for a different punishment from a Lore3 and they would talk it through with me and see that I am given a punishment that hits further from home.

Probably butchered that explanation, but that's the best I can do.

Pretty much spot on. It covers a larger variety of things though. If someone suffers from Leukemia and had to have their hair shaved, they can avoid that as a punishment IC. Or Marty brought up in the meeting: If someone was going through a rough breakup IRL they can ignore/disallow (With Lore 3 approval) an RP where a character is trying to get between a couple/relationship they are in IRP for a bit.
